    How the stone works

    • 1 stone= 14 pounds = 6.35029 kg
    • 1 pound= 0.453592 kg = 1/14 stone
    • 1 kilogram= 2.20462 lb = 0.157473 stone
    • Written as“11 st 4 lb” or “11 stone 4”

So to convert kilograms to stone, divide by 6.35; the whole number is the stones and the remainder (× 14) is the pounds. For example 75 kg ÷ 6.35 = 11.81 stone → 11 stone and 0.81 × 14 = 11 st 11 lb. Going the other way, multiply the stones by 14, add the pounds, then multiply by 0.4536: 12 st 7 lb = 175 lb × 0.4536 = 79.4 kg.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does the UK use stone for body weight?

The stone is an old British unit (originally the weight of a standard stone used on market scales) that was fixed at 14 pounds in the 1800s. Although the UK officially went metric, body weight in everyday speech, in gyms and on most bathroom scales is still given in stone and pounds. Health services such as the NHS record weight in kilograms, which is why so many people need to convert.

How do I convert kg to stone without a calculator?

Divide the kilograms by 6.35 to get decimal stone. Keep the whole number as stones, then multiply the decimal part by 14 to get the pounds. A quick mental shortcut: every 6.35 kg is one stone, so 63.5 kg is exactly 10 stone.

Is a UK stone the same as a US stone?

Yes – a stone is 14 pounds in both, but the unit is essentially never used in the United States, where body weight is given in pounds only. 1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35 kg everywhere.
