Real materials vary with moisture, particle size and source, typically by around ±10%, and site conditions (soft ground, uneven subgrade, over-excavation) can change the quantity needed.

Confirm before you order

Always check your measurements, confirm the density or tons-per-yard figure with your supplier, and consider ordering a small margin – a second delivery usually costs more than a little surplus material.

Not engineering advice

Nothing here replaces the judgement of a qualified engineer or contractor. Rip rap sizing on waterways, structural fill, retaining wall drainage, foundations and anything that requires a permit must be designed and checked by a professional in accordance with local codes.
